MediaSmart:
PROMOTING SMART USE OF MEDIA BY CHILDREN, TEENS AND FAMILIES
Pediatricians and public health experts have identified the influence of mass media on children and adolescents as a major public health issue. Research evidence indicates a significant correlation between exposure to entertainment media and the following health risks.
Aggressive behavior, violence, desensitization to violence
Poor school function
Sleep disturbances
Obesity, dieting and eating disorders
Substance use and abuse
Image and self-concept issues
At risk-unhealthy sexual behaviors,
Consumerism
MEDIA SMART assists our community's youth, parents, educators, health, and youth service providers in understanding both the positive and negative effects of the mass media on child and teen health/ behaviors. We encourage and advocate for wise and appropriate use of mass media.
Through community education, we offer media literacy skills, information and interventions, including media production opportunities for youth.
We offer:
Speakers and workshops for parents, youth, professionals
Trainings for professionals working with children (education, medical, social service, criminal justice mental health, youth service providers)
A MediaSmart Resource Library for professionals
Consultation in developing media literacy education programs
Consultation to media on how mass media affects child/teen health and behaviors
